The pineapple plant “Mi Amigo” adds a tropical atmosphere to rooms. In fact, above the graceful green sprigs protrudes a real pineapple! Originally, the pineapple plant comes from the jungles of Uruguay. Nowadays it is seen a lot in the home, especially in bedrooms. In fact, the ‘Mi Amigo’ works against snoring! The pineapple plant’s fragrances have a breath-opening effect and the plant produces extra oxygen at night. The enzyme that the pineapple plant further releases during the night is good for your health. Once the pineapple is ripe, it will fall off the plant. Note that the pineapple was not grown for consumption but as an ornamental plant. This means that the pineapple is not edible. Of course, this does not make the plant any less fun, it is still an incredibly cute sight!
Care guide
Because the Pineapple Plant ‘Mi Amigo’ comes from a tropical environment, it needs high humidity. Therefore, it is recommended to water the leaves regularly. Always water the pineapple plant in the heart of the plant as well as on the soil. It is best to keep the soil moist without letting the plant stand in a layer of water. Preferably do not place the plant in direct sunlight, but also not completely in the shade. Also, the plant will not grow tremendously, so it will not take up much space. So an incredibly easy, yet special houseplant!
Light
Likes bright light and can survive in direct sunlight, but too much of it will burn its leaves
Water
During the growing season the top 2 cm of soil should be dry between watering. It will need less water in the solder seasons and survive with dryer soil
Temperature
Should be kept in a well-heated room preferably above 15 ºC
Nutrition
Enjoys a mix of orchid compost and peat-free multi compost soil
Care
Once the fruit fades, it should be snipped off, it should then produce offsets which will take over and become new pineapple plants
Brown leaf tips are a tell-tale sign that the surrounding air is too dry. Snip these ends off and place it on top of a pebble tray to increase humidity
Additional information
It is grown more as an ornamental plant and the fruit it produces is edible but very bitter. When the pineapple drops off, you should get pups in the soil which you can re-pot and grow into whole new plants.
Toxicity
The pineapple plant is non-toxic to pets and humans.
Its ability to release oxygen at night, unlike most other plants that release oxygen during the day, makes it a perfect bedroom plant.
It can improve the air quality by removing toxins, while also providing fresh oxygen while you sleep.
Won’t grow too much higher than 40cm, but it will beget more pups quickly which you can repot and cultivate
Upon delivery, the plant has a height of 35 to 45cm.
